The WellTech Hot Rod™ is an EMI Rig Floor Inspection System designed to quickly and affordably inspect steel sucker rods as they are being pulled during the well-servicing process. Designed to work with the WellTech (IV and 4X) electronics and cables, this system provides the customer with a very economical upgrade to inspect sucker rods in addition to tubing. The compact inspection canister is rated to support 50,000 pounds of string weight and has an inspection capacity of sizes 5/8” to 1-1/4” O.D. API sucker rods, with couplings, and rod guides. The system utilizes completely non-contact solid-state Hall effect sensors to detect transverse flaws and large areas of pitting, and corrosion. The WellTech Hot Rod™ is available for purchase as a complete system, including the electronics, software, and cables for new customers.

The system is calibrated before being installed on the well servicing rig floor. The rig will typically pick up the inspection canister and lower it onto the wellhead. After the canister is in place, the cables are connected, and the sucker rods are pulled through the canister. The inspector observes the signals on the computer and determines the classification of the condition of the rods, based on the data presented in "real-time " in the software. Rod elevators are placed onto the rod near the coupling and lowered onto the canister. The rig crew breaks the rod couplings apart, sets the inspected rod to the side, and the process is repeated for the duration of the well. There are usually two people required to operate the WellTech Hot Rod™ system, being the rig helper and the inspector. The inspector will tell the rig helper to instruct the well servicing rig operator to either reject the rods due to flaws or reuse them in the well. Classification color bands are painted on the rods immediately after it is inspected, according to the inspection criteria.
